The Ohio State University Extension Office of Pike County creates education and wellness opportunities in a variety of ways. From 4-H bake sales to virtual field trips, free classes, and vendor fairs, 2020 may mark a year hit by a pandemic, but OSU continues its efforts to serve the community.

Helping people explore how science-based knowledge can improve social, economic, and environmental conditions, The Ohio State University Extension Office of Pike County has been busy the past year.

The program is a non-formal educational youth development initiative offered to individuals from kindergarten through 19. Family and Consumer Sciences Educator Tammy Jones and Ag and Natural Resources Educator Will Hamman lead the program.

"We offer programs for the residents of Pike County and surrounding counties. These programs cover a broad range of topics from nutrition and wellness, food safety, financial education, parenting education, pesticide recertification, fertilizer recommendations, forage quality analysis, on-farm research, home, yard, and garden issues, and much more,” Jones said. “Our office also coordinates the 4-H program in Pike County."

When asked what sets these activities apart from other local and regional organizations, Jones and Hamman furthered that though mental and physical health, people are better equipped to handle life’s challenges, like the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We offer educational programs that fit the needs of Pike County residents ranging from birth to older adults while improving social, economic, and environmental conditions," Jones said.

Unlike other needs-based non-profits, OSU-Pike offers extensive educational programs and science-based researched resources.

"OSU Extension is a trusted educational resource in the community, and that's why it matters to the community," Hamman said.

Jones and Hamman ensure everyone can participate and that there is something for everyone.
