Naz Vineyard and Winery in Kingston has scheduled a Halloween event, but it is just part of the offerings from the winery that has Slovakian influences and is operated by Jack and Cindy Mergo.

Halloween fun just part of area winery's offerings

Nestled behind the beautiful sugarloaf mountains, Naz Vineyard and Winery in Kingston is preparing for this year’s Halloween event.

Na zdravie, (naz dra’-vee-ah), which means cheers in Slovak, is owned and operated by Jack and Cindy Mergo. With 10 acres of grapevines, their family business functions as a family-friendly winery rooted in Slovakian style.

Commonly known as the “Naz Winery,” Mergo’s mission is to provide great wine, delicious woodfired pizza, and good conversations among friends and family while enjoying the views.

While Na zdravie has traditional events throughout the year within their regular business hours (Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.; closed Sunday), their Halloween event offers something new for everyone.

“We have events often at Naz Winery, from St. Jude Research fundraising to Catch and Release, to the neuter and spay of cats,” Jack Mergo said. “We encourage a costume for fun and have a 50/50 raffle that 1/2 will go to a charity of the winner’s choice.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. on Halloween (Saturday, Oct. 31) with entertainment by Ashley Huffer and Dale Clay from 6-6:45 p.m. and Second Story String Band from 7-10 p.m., the costume contest will take place at 8:45 p.m. and award three category winners: funniest, most original, and best overall based on loudest audience cheer and applause levels. Awardees will receive gift certificates.

However, rather than seeing the event as a contest event, Mergo encourages this to be just a fun event.

Signs for social distancing and wearing masks will be posted per local and state requirements, and the event will end at 10 p.m.
